Blogger's Quilt Festival 9-Patch

I am so excited to be participating in the Fall 2011 Blogger's Quilt Festival! . At first I was kind of reluctant for fear of not having a more "sophisticated quilt". Once I read "your skill level, or style of quilts are not in question – everyone is welcome to participate. Join in the fun!" I was in!

This quilt is the first quilt that I've ever hand-quilted and is the largest quilt I've finished so far. My Grandma taught me how to quilt and I still have my first quilt top that I made with her but this was my first quilt that I did on my own. It has no written pattern. I had to figure out all of the measurements. It features mostly 1930's reproduction fabrics. I wanted to display those fabrics in their full glory so I decided to make a very simple 9-patch pattern with blue-green sashing. It has 24 blocks. I hand-quilting the whole quilt over a period of about 6 months and finished a few weeks ago. Hand-quilting this quilt was such a memorable experience. In the midst of making this quilt I moved across the country to beautiful Tennessee. In many ways the memories I made over the last few months are stitched into this quilt; The friends that visited us from Washington DC, moving to Tennessee, my family performing and being vendors at the CHEC conference in June....and every joyful day and sad day in between...every rainy day and days filled with sunshine. It was a slow process of growth, change happiness and sadness. It is a quilt that I sleep under every night and a piece of my history that I will treasure always.

Selling and Crafting in The Second Great Depression

Although many won't admit it and will deny it, the USA is currently in a second Great Depression. Times are hard, money is harder to come by, debt is a national plague, and selling is harder than ever. Some crafters are able to sell better than others but in general I have definitely seen the decline in business when comparing to last years sales. Unfortunately the economy is the one big thing that is totally out of a seller's control. As I was pondering this earlier today I was feeling down and discouraged but the thing is, we are going through what countless American families were going through in the 1930s. People were doing what they could to make money in a time where it was next to impossible. We, like them, are part of history. This will pass but in the meantime we can at least hold on to the knowledge that we are merchants in the midst of a historical time that we will look back on and remember how hard we tried, our failures and successes, and how we kept on going.

My Creative Space Diary Quilt

A while back I bought a book on Amazon that, in my opinion, every quilter should own: A Quilter's Diary. It is the sweetest book that walks you step by step to making a diary quilt. I made mine fairly small (lap size quilt / wall-hanging) but you could make yours up to a king size if you like. The patterns are fairly simple; some are more difficult than others and some are just plain easy. My quilt's blocks each mean something special to me. I didn't use sashing because I wanted to achieve a scrappy, patchwork-y look that came without sashing. I also used fabrics that were already in my stash including a fabric that I've had for 10 years that's been waiting for the perfect project. :)

My Creative Space...Anticipating Fall

Embroidery How-To : Using Coloring pages

I have a new-found LOVE for embroidery. As many of you know I am making a quilt that will have 24 embroidered squares; each one having a special meaning for me. That's a LOT of embroidery. :) I'm loving it though! I'm going to share with you one of my secrets. Take a quick look at the picture on the post below this post (the ball of yarn with knitting needles). That's one of my quilt blocks featuring a picture I got using a coloring page I just found on google (see above pic). :D Cool huh? It is true that iron-on embroidery patterns are wonderful but I find this way to be a lot more customized and personal. This how-to is so easy I didn't really think pictures were overly necessary. :)

You will need:

Light-colored fabric

A light table (or a window works too)

A regular pencil

A coloring page

1.) Place the coloring page on the light table (or window) and tape it in place if desired.

2.) Place fabric over coloring page (tape in place if desired)

3.) With pencil LIGHTLY trace over fabric to make the design shining through from the coloring page (make sure you can see the design but don't make the lines too dark)

And voila! Easy huh? Is it the most professional way of doing things? No, but it works in a pinch and is a lot of fun! You can trace simple patterns or really complex images. Either way, have fun! There are lots and lots of free coloring pages that you can find by searching under "images". For example "Horse coloring page" has a lot of great options if you want to embroider a horse.

This week I've continued to work on my quilt. I finished a block with embroidered lilacs on it (unfortunately I didn't get a good enough picture to post). Last night I started this block; a ball of yarn with knitting needs, and I'm LOVING it! The lilac block took so much time and detail and this one is is more basic. So far most of it is the chain stitch and the top of the knitting needles is the back stitch and the satin stitch. In case you can't see it the yarn is light blue and the knitting needles are dark red. :)

I just had something really scary happen to my computer...yep..you guessed it; big bad virus, mal ware, worms...the works. Scared the living daylights out of me. Thank goodness for my spy ware program; Webroot. You can buy it at Best Buy and it is absolutely THE BEST. I totally recommend it....especially because it totally saved my computer today :)

How do I become a fabric designer?

AKA textile Designer. How do I do it? I have some really GREAT ideas for fabric designs (if I do say so myself) but how in the world do I get started? First of all I'm not interested in going to school for it. I have the ideas, computer savvy, and artistic ability. Now what? In my quest for fabrics to use on my memory quilt I have discovered that there is literally no one out there selling fabrics like the ones I'm looking for. I have the potential. How do I harness it?

Little Golden Book Love

Some of my best memories from when I was little involve books, especially Little Golden Books; the adorable illustrations, the fun an innocent plots...I love everything about them. Yesterday I bought this one on Ebay. It's one of my favorites from when I was little and somewhere along the line we lost it. Well...now it will be mine once again. Yes, I'm an adult but I can get just as easily drawn in to a wonderful children's book as I could when I was a playful little girl.

Hello to my devoted readers! I know it has been a long time but I'm determined to get back on the ball keeping up with my blog including posting tutorials, videos, etc. Today I'm showing you a small glimpse into what I've been working on; a memory quilt. It will be made up of forty-eight 11" squares; 24 will be just fabric squares in the pattern of my choice, the other 24 will be hand-embroidered by me, each block having a special meaning or memory behind it. This block represents my family (if we were chickens that is). The patterns for the rooster, hen and chicks came from my new book that I bought at Barnes and Noble the other day; "Doodle Stitching; The Motif Collection" by Aimee Ray.

Going Drop Spindle CRAZY

I am trying so very hard to find the right drop spindle to start spinning with. I have researched and researched I cannot for the life of me find the answers to my questions. If any of my readers/followers spin I would so appreciate your insight:

I want to spin sport/worsted weight yarn so...

1.) Do I use a top whorl spindle or a bottom whorl?

2.) How much does the spindle need to weigh?

3.) Overall how to I control the weight of the yarn I am spinning?

Fall! It has to be my very favorite season. I love the deep, rich colors and the crisp, clean air. I have spent the last couple of weeks prepping some items to list in my shop for the new season. It may seem a little early but it's really not too early to get started listing Fall items. I know that I'm not the only one who's been in the Fall mood because a lot of the Etsy front pages have been Fall-themed treasuries. People are already looking so it's time to get started! :) For me here are some things I'm getting ready to list:

To spend or not to spend...that is the question

I have a new line of yarn that I absolutely adore but I haven't had the chance to try it yet. Stitch nation has come out with a new line of yarns; one is an alpaca/wool blend, the next is 100% wool, and the last is a bamboo blend. I was at Michael's the other day and I am in love with the texture of the bamboo blend but I like the colors of the wool. The problem with the wool and alpaca blend is that both seem to be pretty itchy...they're not the soft kind of wool. They're only like $4.95 per skein so that's not too bad but I'm going to have to find the perfect pattern to use. Plus, I have so much yarn as it is....why is it with yarn there's always one fiber or one color that I just have to try? MORAL OF THIS STORY: The first step to breaking a yarn addiction is admitting you have one...

Hello friends! I'm so sorry I haven't blogged in like forever! :) Life has been crazy as I've been scrambling around trying to make sales on crocheted items during the summer...not easy but possible with some hard work. I'm kind of debating something right now. I make baby booties for 3-6 month-olds and newborns...lots of hearts no sales on booties yet. I'm wondering if it's just the slow summer market or that I should just stop making them. I don't know...in the meantime though I have some that I have made and I'm listing them one at a time hoping to get some attention. I just listed these today. I would love your thoughts! :D Love them? Hate them? Any critiques?

New Vera Bradley Backpack!

I have a great new way of organizing the items I use for my business and I thought that maybe it will inspire you to organize your business this way. I got this backpack from my local Vera Bradley store (you can find it on http://www.verabradley.com/). They're having 25% off their backpacks right now so I bought this one to hold whatever I need it to hold for my business. I can carry all my regular purse items, my mini laptop, file folders, my camera, USB, and all kinds of things in it. It is also great for holding my large crochet projects on the go. This will be absolutely perfect for when I travel because I can carry everything I'll need for my business when I'm away from home. And...bonus...it's adorable! Vera Bradley has so many patterns and styles to choose from. There really is something for everyone. They're made out of cotton so they're really light to carry and they have lots and lots of pockets which are wonderful for organizing. It's kind of like having a portable office or craft space. You can carry everything you need with you wherever you go. Here are some things I carry in my backpack:

1.) A notebook keeping track of orders, addresses, add space buyers and how long they're advertising, and ideas for future projects I'd like to try

2.) My mini laptop/netbook. Portable, cute, fast, great memory and I can operate my business online wherever I go.

3.) My camera and USB cord; I can easily upload my photos into my mini laptop and it's all kept in my backpack together.

4.) Any projects I'm working on

Backpacks and messenger bags are great if you're looking for a way to keep all you eggs in one basket, stay organized and take everything with you. :)

Free Photo-Editing Programs...Loving it!

I've been reading a lot about Photoshop and it sounds like such a great program...but for someone who doesn't want to spend a ton of money right now, I'm using some alternatives that I think are absolutely wonderful! My main photo editing program is http://www.gimp.org/ It's what I used to create my blog banner. :) For etsy I use a combination of GIMP and/or http://www.picnik.com/ . Both are completely free and I highly recommend them. :)

Great Way to Organize Yarn

I went to a very cool antiques/gift shop across town and found this great shelf set. It almost looks like old wooden crates that have been stacked but it's one piece. I loved the way it looked and it turned out to be perfect for yarn storage! It's a great way to see what I have, be able to display my collection and keep it all organized at the same time.

I don't know about you, but I've always been kind of skeptical about buying body products off of etsy. I know that most sellers are credible and honest but how do we really know what's used in the products? Well, I am very pleased to say that I know of a shop that has quality body and lip products that I would buy from without hesitation; Practical Simplicity. I know the seller personally as someone who is sweet, honest, creative and loves making the items in her shop.

Who doesn't enjoy things that smell good? I am a smell addict...seriously anything flowers, fruity, yummy, you name it. Some of the scents in Practical Simplicity's shop include brown sugar, chocolate, vanilla, and orange. Irresistible? Yes! I also have to say that I love the names of her items. "Lip Flops" has got to be one of the most ingenious names ever! :D What are lip flops you ask? Here is a description from an item description:

"I call them lip Flops because I forgot to add more flavoring/oils in them, and thought they where done for! But to my surprise, they work just as well as my other lip balm just they do not have a strong scent to them! I like them allot and they are more like a glossy lip balm than the others and I like it allot! I hope you enjoy my lip flop creations!"

One of the main reasons I love this shop is because the seller puts so much heart into her creations. Everything she does is done with care and thought. I hope that you will visit her shop and enjoy it as much as I do! :D

The Spirit of Etsy Encouragement- A shop worth visiting

Last night I received the sweetest convo from a dear seller in Australia (I love it when I meet people overseas) complimenting my blog and greatly encouraging me in my pursuits. There are some shops that are worth supporting, not only for their wonderful items, but for the kindness of the sellers.

SHOP NAME: Amaria's Paper Work

Featured Items: Wooden paper dolls and magnetic Bible stories

Sometimes, old-fashioned treasures are the best and Amaria's Paper Work is no exception. I'm sure some of you remember playing with paper dolls when you were little. Perhaps they were made of only paper and the little tabs on the clothes broke easily. This is not the case with Amaria's dolls. Amaria's designs are designed and hand painted by her, printed onto matt photo paper and mounted onto wood giving the dolls durability and extra quality. Many of her designs remind me of the vintage and retro Golden Books. In addition to these wonderful dolls she also makes sets of magnetic Bible stories including the story of Abraham and Lot. These would be great for Sunday School teachers or parents who want to teach their children these stories. As if these items weren't good enough, she does custom orders. I just love how her shop brings to mind the good, old days of family values, toys that didn't require batteries or remote controls, and quality that can only be found in handmade items. Amaria is a great person who is so kind and encouraging and I highly recommend her shop.

New Etsy Listing- Newborn Booties

I just finished these yesterday and I LOVE this pattern! :D The basic instructions came out of the newest issue of "Crochet Today". These are quick to make up and they're pretty easy too. I would definitely recommend that you go to Michael's or Joann's and pick up the newest issue. The booties I did were done in cotton yarn which, in my opinion is always a right answer for baby items. These can be purchased from my etsy shop here.
